The outback is synonymous with Australia’s image as a sunburnt land. The ochre hues and fiery sunrises of Uluru in the Red Center is one of the most amazing natural shows you’ll ever see, and you can also catch the encore in reverse every dusk at sunset. Take a guided walk around the base of the majestic rock and transport yourself back to the Dreamtime and folklore of the Anangu culture.

While Uluru may be the main drawcard of the Red Center, also located in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park are the dramatic rock domes of Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas. Three hours from Uluru, the carved sandstone cliffs of Kings Canyon and the desert views into the sheer chasm will astound you. The Rim Walk offers up hidden areas like ‘The Lost City’ and ‘Garden of Eden’ – Aztec-like formations and secret oasis waterholes – amid prehistoric ferns and tiny trees for the intrepid trekker.

While these rock formations are amazing, what will really strike you is the vast space of the Red Center where nearby attractions are actually hours away. For creature comforts, head to the famous outback town of Alice Springs, a green site in the desert landscape. Here, you can immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture, pioneer sites and stay on cattle stations or luxury retreats.
